How to Efficiently Work From Home

Updated: May 6, 2020

There are a lot of you who, because of the current situation, that have just started working from home and you're trying to figure out what your new routine looks like. It can be challenging trying to navigate the transition from heading into work everyday to working from home. I went from a full time 9-5 Mon-Fri position to freelance hours and it took a bit of trial and error and tips from others who work from home to figure out how to be efficient while working from home.

I'd like to share a few tips on how to efficiently work from home:

1. Time block

This is important, especially if you are easily distracted and have other things on the go. Time block your work hours for the day. I block my time for work hours when I work most efficiently which happens to be early morning (5am-10am) and in the evening (7pm-10pm).

2. Daily to do list

Create a daily to do list for work related items. Prioritize those tasks and schedule accordingly within your time blocked work hours. Make this to do list semi-flexible, in that if you don't get something done, don't get flustered, just rearrange the tasks and keep working. However; do not procrastinate on tasks without deadlines, add them to your list and get them done.

3. Set up a designated space

Don't just set up on the couch or in bed, grab your laptop and work. Don't get me wrong, every now and then that is fine, but having a designated working area can ensure productivity and a focused mind. It doesn't have to be a separate room, create a space in the living room corner, in your bedroom, or on the dining room table. Keep it clutter free with no distractions (tv, etc.)

Working home home involves a learning curve for everyone. Each individual has to create a work from home routine that works best for them. Reading this blog is a good start to figuring out that new routine, but remember to continuously research and talk to others to enhance and elevate your efficiency.
